The Rt Hon. The Lord Heseltine is a Non-affiliated Life peer who has sat under this title in the Lords since 12 July 2001. Prior to joining the Lords, he sat in the Commons as an MP, having been first elected in 1966.
Following a Conservative victory in 1970, Lord Heseltine was promoted to Government by the then Prime Minister, Edward Heath, as a junior minister at the Department of Transport.
Lord Heseltine became a Cabinet Minister in various departments from 1979 to 1986 and 1990 to 1997. His roles included Secretary of State for Defence in 1983 and Secretary of State for the Environment in 1990. Lord Heseltine acted as Deputy Prime Minister under John Major from 1995 to 1997. He later served as an advisor to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Growth, and as a Commissioner on the National Infrastructure Commission (October 2015 to March 2017). He is the founder and Chairman of the Haymarket Group.
