The Whitehall Group were delighted to welcome Lord Hannay of Chiswick, former member of the International Relations and Defence Committee, House of Lords as guest speaker for a lunch on Wednesday, 22nd March. During lunch Lord Hannay discussed ‘Is the Ukraine crisis driving Europe closer together?’
Lord Hannay entered the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1959 and was initially posted to positions in Tehran and Kabul. From 1965 until the 1970s, he was a representative of the British government in discussions which led to the United Kingdom’s entry into the European Economic Community in 1973. He has held the posts of British Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the European Union and British Ambassador to the United Nations.
He took on specialised roles as the UK’s Special Representative for Cyprus between 1996 and 2003; and was a member of the UN Secretary General’s High Level Panel for Threats , Challenges and Change (2003/5). Lord Hannay is a member of the House of Lords European Affairs Committee and sits on the Advisory Board of the Centre for European Reform. He is an Honorary Governor of the Ditchley Foundation; and chairs the European and International Analysts Group.
