Phil Clark – Chair, Wellcome Genome Campus
A qualified surveyor, Phil started his career in the public sector before moving to Aviva Investors, where he established and led its specialist property investment funds team, followed by 14 years at Aegon Asset Management leading public and private global real estate investments. In 2000, he established the Igloo Regeneration Partnership, believed to be the first property investment fund to be focused on sustainable regeneration.
Phil is now a non-executive director for several businesses and also chairs the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors’ Commercial Property Forum. He is chair of the Academy of Real Assets, a social enterprise which partners with schools in disadvantaged areas and the estate industry to provide opportunities for young people and increase socioeconomic diversity in the real asset management sector. He was until recently a member of the Board of Trustees and chair of the University of London estates committee and continues to be an independent member of University College London’s governing body.
Professor Matt Hurles, FMedSci, FRS – Director, Wellcome Sanger Institute
Matthew Hurles became Director of the Wellcome Sanger Institute in 2023. He also leads a research group focused on deciphering the genetic causes of severe developmental disorders, and understanding how DNA mutates as it is passed from generation to generation.
Matt joined the Wellcome Sanger Institute in 2003 and went on to lead research projects and international collaborations in genetics and rare diseases, helping to transform patients’ lives and advance our understanding of genomics. In 2017, Matt became Head of the Human Genetics Programme at the Sanger Institute, and in May 2023, he was appointed Director.
He was elected as a fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences in 2017 and a fellow of the Royal Society in 2019.
