Professor Sir Malcolm Grant CBE, Chairman NHS England

‘The extraordinary challenges of future healthcare and the estates implications for the NHS’

Professor Sir Malcolm Grant CBE was Professor of Land Economy and Pro-Vice Chancellor in the University of Cambridge, before becoming Provost and President of University College London a position from which he has just stepped down.  During his tenure, he oversaw a ground-breaking strategic development and building programme.  In 2011 he was appointed Chairman of NHS England, the largest National Health Service Commissioning Body in the United Kingdom, where he is overseeing a formidable programme of strategic, cultural and medical provision change, against a backdrop of one of the most ambitious re-organisations of the National Health Service since its formation.

Professor Grant is a Master of the Bench of the Middle Temple, of which he is also a Barrister.  He is an honorary member of both the Royal Town Planning Institute and of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.  He was appointed a CBE for services to planning, law and local government in 2003, and has served as a board member of the Royal Institution of Great Britain.  He was appointed by the Prime Minister as a British Business Ambassador, serves on the Higher Education Funding Council for England and was knighted in the 2013 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to higher education.

The Whitehall series of lectures, which is to be inaugurated in March 2014, will deal with the main issues confronting Government in the public sector, and is planned as an occasional series with the lectures published by the Society in conjunction with the Department of Land Economy.
