You are invited to this year’s Denman Lecture given by Paul Munro-Faure OBE on the 20th November at 6pm in Room 9, Mill Lane Lecture Rooms. There will be a reception after  from 7.00pm – 8.15pm in the Hicks room, University centre, Mill Lane Cambridge.

Security of tenure – the certainty that a person’s rights to land will be recognized and protected – is a major issue in enabling development to take place in an equitable manner for all, including for the weaker and more vulnerable members of society. The 21st Century is awakening to secure and equitable access to tenure as an important priority in global development targets.

Paul Munro-Faure will review: 1) how pressures on secure tenure have been developing; 2) the global response in addressing these challenges; and 3) solutions that will allow global targets and peoples’ expectations to be met. Paul co-chaired the Food and Agriculture Organization’s Worldwide Task Force for the implementation of Voluntary Guidelines in respect of land tenure around the world, and led their tenure work from 2000-2017.

Paul Munro-Faure (Fitzwilliam 1974) led the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization’s Tenure work from 2000 until his retirement in 2017. Graduating in 1978, he was in the last year of Donald Denman’s tutelage of Land Economy before his retirement. Paul has pursued a career in development work, focusing on policies for land tenure and its management in the transitional and developing economies, and has practised as a Chartered Surveyor in the UK and other developed economies. Following his graduation, he went on to complete an MSc at Reading University and a PhD at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He was elected honorary life member of the Institute of Valuation and Estate Management of Fiji in 1981, the first since the institute’s foundation in 1955. He has been visiting professor at Oxford Brookes University and at the Royal Agricultural University; the former subsequently electing him to an honorary doctorate, DUniv, in 2002. Paul was awarded the title of Honorary Ambassador of the International Federation of Surveyors in 2017 and was the recipient of the RICS Barrett Medal in 2016. Paul was appointed OBE in the 2018 New Year’s Honours list.
