‘The UK’s Foreign Policy- it’s future direction’ – Discussion and Dinner

Thursday 16th June 2011
6.00pm – 10.00pm

The Travellers Club, 106 Pall Mall, London SW1Y 5EP

The Society is privileged to have been able to arrange a unique evening with a panel of distinguished speakers led by the former Foreign Secretary, Douglas Hurd. The Global Economic Crisis, the unprecedented changes sweeping across the Arab world and the growth of the influence of the BRIC group of countries are all forcing important changes on the whole world.  What will all this mean for the UK in the medium to long term?  How should both current and future United Kingdom Governments rethink their Foreign Policy directions?  What might this mean for the UK's place in Europe, in our "special relationship" with America, in the Commonwealth and our role in the United Nations, including our permanent seat on the Security Council?

The panel of speakers will include:

The Rt Hon Lord Hurd of Westwell CH CBE, Foreign Secretary (1989-1995)
Professor Lord Hennessy, Atlee Professor of Contemporary History, University of London
Sir Kevin Tebbit KCB CMG, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence (1998 – 2005)
The Rt Hon Sir Michael Palliser GCMG, Permanent Under Secretary and Head of Diplomatic Service, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (1975 – 1982)
The discussion will be moderated by
Gideon Rachman, Chief Foreign Affairs Columnist, Financial Times
There will be number of other distinguished Foreign Affairs specialists amongst our guests.
